Intermezzo Chamber Players
Mary Stribling & Friends
and some surprises

7 pm / May 10, 2012
The Intermezzo Chamber Players is a talented alliance of composer/teacher/performers from the metro-Denver area. Their specialties include performing works from the vast repertoire of classical music spanning several centuries as well as presenting music of more recent vintage. Often, especially on Eclectic programs, they revel in finding unique ways to collaborate with musicians of other styles, in arrangements written for various combinations of performers, compositions they have written for these occasions, or improvisations and impromptus created especially for their audiences. The Players’ versatility and imagination, and a talent for connecting with the listener, make each performance unique and captivating. Accomplished artists all, these musicians have performed around the world to considerable acclaim. Tonight they perform several short pieces, or miniatures, from Halsey Stevens to Wachsman to Zwillich to Hindemith, and a new work commissioned for the concert as well.
Bassist, singer and composer Mary Stribling and her band Combo Amazo have performed their original songs and instrumentals for more than 15 years. Mary’s compositions move from the more jazz-oriented to more traditional folk since her musical background includes playing bluegrass, folk, jazz, classic rock, country and blues. She has recorded four albums of her music and is currently working on a new release of her jazz compositions. Combo Amazo features Mary on bass and vocals, Eric Weber on mandolin and harmony vocals, Alan Singer on guitar and harmony vocals and Harry Grainger on clarinet, flute and sax. Alan, Eric and Harry’s instrumental compositions add to the eclectic mix of this band. Mary is a founding member of Colorado’s legendary group, The Mother Folkers, played on their three CDs and all their live performances, and has played bass on releases by Carla Sciaky, Vicki Taylor, Katy Moffat, Bonnie Carol, Pamela Robinson, Kathi DeFrancis, Marcia Carteret and many more. She has also played bass behind folk icons Odetta, Josh White Jr. and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot. Her song, “Chocolate,” has been performed on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion and NBC’s Today show. Guitarist Neil Haverstick and Mary have played together for many years and Mary was the bassist on his album Way Down the Mississippi, which received a coveted four-star review in the highly regarded jazz magazine Downbeat.
